Install the app

Home screen, offline use and progress that survives browser clean-ups

Put me on your home screen. That way I'm always at hand, and what you've learned lasts longer.

Why it's worth it

  • Opens like an app. With its own icon, full screen, no address bar or tabs.
  • Works offline.Letters, the dictionary, grammar and audio from pages you've already loaded are available without internet, on a plane or in a Thai village alike.
  • Progress lasts longer.Everything you've learned is stored in the browser itself, and the browser may clear data for a site you haven't visited in a while: in Safari that's about a week without visits. This rule doesn't apply to an app on the home screen.

There's an iPhone app on the App Store

A real app, not a browser page: home screen widgets, audio without a connection and Listen mode. It shares progress with the website if you sign in with Apple or Google.

Open in the App Store

iPhone and iPad with Safari

  1. 1Open thaidee in Safari.
  2. 2Tap Share: the square with an arrow pointing up at the bottom of the screen.
  3. 3Scroll down and choose Add to Home Screen.
  4. 4Tap Add in the top right corner.

Safari only: other browsers on iPhone don't have this option.

Android

  1. 1Open the browser menu, the three dots in the corner.
  2. 2Choose Install app or Add to Home screen.
  3. 3Confirm the installation.

Chrome, Samsung Internet and others: the menu items are named slightly differently.

On a computer, Chrome and Edge can install the app too: use the install icon at the right end of the address bar or Install… in the menu. It's less useful there, since offline use and the home screen are meant for a phone.

What happens to your progress

On Androidthe app and the browser share the same storage: everything you've learned will already be there, so there's nothing to move.

On iPhone and iPadan app on the home screen has its own storage, separate from Safari. That's how the system works: the app can't tell it was installed or look at the browser's data. So you move your progress by hand.

Quick way: the clipboard

  1. 1In Safari: Settings → Progress → Copy.
  2. 2Open the installed app and say hello to Kai. You can change your name later.
  3. 3In the app: Settings → Progress → Paste progress, paste what you copied and tap Replace progress.

If the clipboard doesn't work, use a file

  1. 1Settings → Progress → Save to a file: the file thai-progress.json is saved to Files.
  2. 2In the installed app: Settings → Progress → Load from a file and choose the same file.

From then on, learn in the installed app: the two copies don't sync, and the one left in the browser will fall behind.

Still save a file now and then

Installing isn't a backup. Without an account, your progress stays on this phone: delete the app or lose the device, and the progress goes with it. Once a month, save a file. That's enough to lose nothing and move everything to a new device.
