Thai is written in the Paiboon style, as in most English textbooks and dictionaries: tones as marks above the vowel, long vowels doubled.
ขอโทษkɔ̌ɔ-tôot
How to read it
- ɛ is the open แ, like “a” in “cat”; e is the closed เ.
- ɔ is the open o in ขอ and เกาะ, like “aw” in “law”; o is the closed โ◌.
- ʉ is อึ/อือ, an “oo” said with spread lips; ə is เออ, like “er” without the r.
- k, t, p, ch are aspirated ข ท พ ช; g, dt, bp, j are unaspirated ก ต ป จ.
- The mark above the vowel is the tone: mài low, mâi falling, mái high, mǎi rising. No mark means mid.
