Word order
Put actions, descriptions and owners in the right place.
A basic Thai statement usually places the subject before the verb and the object after it. This is familiar from English, but the small words may differ. ไปตลาด means go to the market: Thai doesn't need a separate to in this pattern.
I eat rice.
The child reads a book.
They're going to the market.
The destination follows ไป directly. เขา can refer to a person without specifying their gender.
A description normally follows its noun. English says a big house; Thai places house before big. The same order appears in อาหารไทย, Thai food, and คนไทย, a Thai person.
a big house
a new car
Thai food
The owner follows the thing owned, often after ของ. บ้านของผม means my house: literally house + of + me. In a familiar relationship, ของ can be omitted, so บ้านผม can have the same meaning.
my house
Common mistake
Don't move a description before its noun just because English does. คนไทย means a Thai person; reversing the two parts doesn't preserve that meaning. First identify the thing, then add its description.

Water at Songkran has a meaning beyond the street water fights. Pouring it is part of showing respect and wishing others good fortune.
